Review # 1 was written on 2013-10-07 00:00:00 Mark Piorkowski The edition I read is fifty years old, so there's been significant scholarship since this was written. Yet Canada is still largely ignored in the discussion of the international aspects of the American Civil War, essentially just a pawn in the UK-US relationship. Winks does a good job of avoiding the commonplace aspects of the story, not needing to rehearse the details of the Trent Affair for instance. He stresses the mixed response due to the split nature of the provinces, as well as the varied relations of the US regions with Canada. Overall, well worth reading. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-10-12 00:00:00 Frank Gladden Very interesting and readable. Interesting and difficult period of Arkansas history. |
