The best and most trusted translation of Marsilius of Padua's Defender of the Peace. I was surprised by this. I expected it to be dry and boring, and expected to use it only to find random meaningful quotes. But the introduction by Gewirth was very useful, and the text itself is readable without wanting to gouge my eyes out. (I have a pretty high tolerance for dry reading anyway, as a history major, but this was almost pleasant.) I wouldn't, however, just recommend everyone to read this. If you're interested in pre-Reformation attacks on the papacy, then it's required to know something about it, but I wouldn't go out and buy this unless you plan on using it more than once. I'm using it as a primary source on Aristotelian concepts of power and state in the wake of the Crusades, so if that's your thing, you'll find this interesting.
