Review # 1 was written on 2007-12-11 00:00:00 Michael Bornemann An Australian writer's narrative accounts of his meetings with writers and other "book people." Of particular interest to me is the Burt Britton piece. As a bookseller at STRAND in the late '60s and early '70s, Burt Britton made a hobby of asking authors to draw self-portraits. He became sort of infamous for doing this. In 1976, Random House published Britton's collection of 500+ author drawings in a book called "Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves." Lurie's fascinating piece on Britton is perhaps the most thorough account of Britton's peculiar notoriety. |
