Like some other reviewers, I also know Campion, but my book review has nothing to do with that history. This is a critique of the book itself judging it by its own merits or lack thereof. It just feels like what someone might come up with if he/she just re-played a tape recorder to catch any semblance of genuine human emotion. The subtlety is not the work of brilliance but coyness. The author doesn't want us to know him only to like him, to think he is special in some way. I don't because there is a note of sheer and utter nonsense, of inauthenticity. It makes everything in the book cacophonous, off-key. I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to anyone. Note, I give most books, even those I don't like, a break because it is hard to write a book, let alone get one published. I've read this book numerous times. The only thing I have learned from it is what to avoid doing myself as a writer. If you want to learn that lesson, order it from your local library, but I cannot recommend it except for target practice. There is always that to look forward to.

There is in Laird's poetry a keen ear for the sudden rhyme or half-rhyme, a discipline in the form, and a vibrating tautness of line that pleases me greatly. It sets the stage for his reflections on human nature and relationships, which in a lesser poet might turn histrionic or bitter, but in Laird are always a synthesis of ironic detachment and fierce honesty. His lipstick screams, his patron saint of elsewhere, his apotheosis-by-home-improvement: these will remain with me for a while. In the meantime, I hope to get my hands on his first collection.
