A book on the role of Quakers in science and industry, mainly in England, from the 17th to the 19th century. With the traditional gentry professions largely denied to them, and framing exposing them to substantial fines for non-payment of tithes because of their Quaker principles, many Quakers turned to industry. Others, mainly from better-off families, engaged in science. In both fields, Quakers made major contributions, and some of them were at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and of the development of banking. This book brings out the role Quakers played. There are two introductory chapters, and after that almost all the rest of the book focuses on particular spheres of business and scientific endeavour, with sections within each chapter devoted to particular individuals or families. There is a lot of genealogical information, so any family historian interested in Quakers will find much of interest. The extent of intermarriage between the Quaker families was considerable. Apart from the opening chapters, this is a book to use as an invaluable reference work rather than to read through. There are genealogical and semi-genealogical charts, and some of these are hard to follow, as are some of the narrative explanations of relationships. I think one would need to enter people's details into a family history software program or on a family history website to make full sense of them, but the raw material is in the book. The index is generally good, but I noted some omissions.

Surpisingly timely insights considering it was written 100 years ago.
