The story of the Andes and its people, the mysterious Naszca and the mighty Inca among them, of the conquistadors and the drug barons, and the land grabbers still raping Amazonia. Quite depressing in places, right up to the present day - especially in its account of how smallpox infected blankets were sent to the Indians, and the murder of the extraordinary Chico Mendes who struggled to unionize his people. A fascinating, disturbing portrait. |
