The full title is "Iron and Steel in the Nineteenth Century; Encyclopedia of American Business History and Biography." It has an companion volume that covers the twentieth century. Laid out like an encyclopedia the chapters written by various writers are in alphabetical order. This large book includes a wide list of biographies on men associated with the iron and steel business in American, each includes a least one photo and is about 5 pages in length. More famous men receive more attention. Company profiles, like Carnegie Steel, Allentown Rolling Mills, Adirondack Iron and Steel Company, etc. are similarly included. In addition, certain processes include their own chapter. Writing style obviously varies by author but the book does include photographs, advertising and some technical drawings. The book is 381 pages in length and has an excellent index. There are over 100 different articles.

It is amazing to read the reflections of someone who was present for so much American history, and Scotty Reston was one of those people. These are his memoirs from a life of reporting, mostly for the New York Times. It is not an easy read, but what resonates is how in the early 1990's (and before) he was writing about issues in America that still are present today. This is a well written, interesting look at American history, and his connections with many leading figures in the world provide excellent personal stories.
