What I liked about The Buying of the President 2004 was that it was all information with no commentary or recrimination. It was exactly what Joe Friday of the Dragnet series would appreciate, “Just the facts Ma’am—just the facts” and the facts were what we got. I think now the entire election process, including the nomination of candidates, is predicated to a major degree on how much money they can raise. And that involves appealing, in most cases, to special-interest groups who hope they can get a favor after the election is over. Dilapidated voting machines—those whose age and condition are most often associated with malfunction and large numbers of ‘undercounted’ ballots—were three times as likely to be located in Black precincts as in White precincts. …conservatives justices effectively “created a new right out of whole cloth and made sure it ultimately protected only one person—George Bush>” The Buying of the President was written to let readers know how Washington politics actually work. It is a great read, an easy read, and a fast read. The Buying of the President will be appreciated by everyone who reads it.

When I bought this a few weeks before the primaries in 2004, I wasn't really thinking about how quickly it'd become outdated. Tant pis! Anyway, I'm not entirely sure I agree with the premise anymore while we all want people with a couple of bucks in their pocket to be able to run for office with a plausible chance of winning (here's looking at you, Ulysses S. Grant...) I don't think it's fair to claim that anyone who accepts money from a corporation has been "bought" by them. What is it that makes people bribers when they band together to limit liability and make or do something together, but when they're alone their money counts as speech? This sort of inflamatory rhetoric doesn't do much for me.
