With only a total of 24 pages, including many full page photographs, this is an excellent book to introduce young readers to nonfiction. Students will learn about the appearance, size, and behavior of this desert mammal. They will discover how meerkats communicate and how they protect themselves from enemies. I found it interesting that meerkats are so helpful to their fellow colony members. They take care of the old and the sick, they give "hugs", and they babysit the young of others when mothers go out to hunt. I would pair this book with Alexander McCall Smith's meerkat mystery, in which two siblings have a pet meerkat. Read the nonfiction book to find out if it is possible to make a meerkat into a pet. Are meerkats fearful of people?

Informative and very good photography. This would be excellent for any child that is really interested in Disney's The Lion King. Over achieving 1st Graders shouldn't have a problem with this.
