Review # 1 was written on 2007-07-16 00:00:00 Michael Chase This is a fascinating and sprightly-written exploration of what might seem dry stuff: the nuts and bolts of Shakespeare's dramaturgy. There's a lot of quantitative data here, but Meagher writes with such verve that the book never bogs down in the details. Meagher has a particularly acute eye for dramatic possibilities so, though some (many?) of his points are speculative, they are nevertheless well-buttressed by such evidence as exists (Meagher's research is formidable) and are highly plausible, at least for anyone with a sensitive eye to what works in performance. Somewhat marred by an overabundance of editorial slips (typos, etc.) but quite valuable, I think, to anyone interested in the nuances of Shakespeare's dramaturgy. |
Review # 2 was written on 2017-12-20 00:00:00 John Mcclanahan It's a great nuts and bolts guide to writing the ten-minute play and explaining how theatricality can (and should!) exist in it. It doesn't have specified lists and other charts so you'll have to just read the information. Still worth the read! |
