Mary Jones, the woman at the center of Victor Hawley's heart and diary, was my great-great-aunt, and she is a fascinating character for a novelist. Victor's diary offers an intriguing look at Oneida, particularly the methods the powerful elite used in their attempts to control the younger and less privileged members.
