I found parts of this book illuminating and instructive'Chapter 7, "Patriarchy," in particular had some valuable new perspectives for me. Unsurprisingly to those who know me, though, I part ways with the arguments in this book in numerous places. Here, though, I just want to mention two: First, I was surprised that the book didn't engage more meaningfully with the fact that the criminal justice system over which prosecutors preside is a key support of a variety of systemic inequalities, including patriarchy. This risks making any prosecutorial pursuit actions'particularly those that discount the wishes of primarily female victims'constitutive of patriarchy rather than feminism. Second, the book's argument against giving victims authoritative control over domestic violence prosecutions (even only in certain circumstances) relied on the assumption that doing so would transform the criminal justice system into a mere replica of the tort system'a system for private holding to account, rather than communal holding to account. But that argument ignores the value of forgiveness, and the value of recognizing and giving effect to others' forgiveness of those who have wronged them. Making an otherwise justified prosecution yield to the victim's wish for a dismissal does not mean eliminating the communal nature of prosecution; it simply requires recognizing that there is value in forgoing communal condemnation out of respect for a more directly affected party's decision to forgive.

I have recently been looking for information and books with regard to abused men. This book is much needed and was the best I have found (only found 3) The media has to stop looking away when men are abused. Abuse in not gender specific, and in a way, as a mom, it more horrifying when its directed at a man, when that man is your son.
