After a rough start (You can start reading somewhere in the middle of chapter 2 and won't miss out on much), this book got good. I thought it would be about the Rural Purge, Westerns, and then the ABC '90s sitcoms which took place in the Midwest, but Johnson subverted my expectations. While they did kind of acknowledge the Purge and ABC sitcoms, it was through a different lens.

I'm only half way through this book and already it's one of the most concise and penetrating critiques of the Mass Media in America that I've ever read. As someone who works in the business, Parenti's analysis of distortions, ideology, omissions and power of the Media in our lives is an essential read. Be prepared to cancel your cable...
