I enjoyed this book as a jumping point for looking at Catholicism. Wilkes is a journalist who is Catholic, and he presented quite a few facets of the church in this book, starting with Jesus and ending with the church of believers today. Each chapter had some historical background laid out, but the driving point of the book centered on even if you aren't the perfect Catholic, you can always turn to God (by way of the Church). He didn't achieve purely objective writing on different subjects, and his choice for quotes seemed off, but all of his subjects lent themselves to further thought, even if it was to disagree with him. A good book just to get back into what it means to be Catholic.

THIS REVIEW IS ACTUALLY FOR HIS BOOK "LIVING PEACE" NOT the title indicated. I did not want to re-type my remarks... I wanted to really, really like this book because the author does give MUCH to PRAY and PONDER about peace. I appreciated his references to Gandhi and to Martin Luther King, two persons I have long admired! I also appreciated the practicality of certain parts of the book: how to pray; how to get practice peace-making by looking at all as ones brothers and sisters. He also gave some viable suggestions about HOW one can get involved in peace-making organizations. Having said all that, the book was a disapointment because of what it left UNSAID. When he made reference to peace in the Middle East for example, he mentioned the hardships of the Palestinians without mentioning the innocent Jewish victims and he dismisses those killed by Saddam Hussein in a simple perenthesis while deploring the actions of the USA. I was also struck by his lack of references to the pronouncements of the Popes and the Catholic Bishops on behalf of Peace while he makes a point of mentioning "celebrities" like Martin Sheen! Fr John also does not mention the efforts of groups like Focolare, or the "peace churches: Mennonite, Brethren or other religions like the Jains or the Bahai's. For all of his "professional" involvement he seems to have a limited exposure to some aspects of the "peace movement." These are are glaring omissions so I'll only give it 2-3 stars! As an aside, several weeks ago I was on Fr John's Website and had a question about a post he had made. HE actually responded to my querry not a "handler." I was impressed by that. I will definitely re-read this book as it challenged me!!
