An excellent collection of war letters that allow the dead to come alive in ways that a traditional history text does not always have the space. Over 318 pages, Housman has arranged transcriptions of letters alphabetically by the authors last name. Each letter, or series of letters, begins with a brief biographical detail about place of education, occupation, and time of death. For some of the entries a time of enlistment is also provided. The letters are predominately from white British Dominion forces, though there are occasional features from women working in the medical field. Tone varies from trying to find humor in war to the other extreme of the horrors of combat. The major weakness of the work is the lack of an index. Researchers would either need to hope for serendipity or have the time to read through the work. (Or perhaps to keyword search a digital version). The 2002 edition of this work was published alongside German Students' War Letters .

Well, that was icky Quite mortifying to read this, having always admired Hazlitt's writing. It seems hardly possible to believe any more there can be any insight or good judgement in his essays, when he could write this, ostensibly to uncover the treachery of the woman he "loved" (stalked, hounded, slobbered over, terrified). He published their letters, transcribed their conversations verbatim, all to convict her; and on every single page he, Hazlitt himself, is almost unbearable to watch.
