Review # 1 was written on 2015-01-10 00:00:00 Kenneth Landsbaum I feel like this book was really about some ideas for instruction in the classroom, not necessarily just about working on a block schedule. While some of the ideas were new to me, many were things I've been using for years. Also, it is not aligned to the CCSS in any way so there are some things I wouldn't be able to use. Overall, not what I was hoping for. I was interested in more information on pacing guidelines. While that was addressed, it was a minor part of the book. Just meh for me... |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-04-05 00:00:00 Michael Murphy This book is a good primer for all the basic teaching methods used nowadays. One valuable (and thoroughly produced) part was the section on effective questioning strategies. One could teach a whole unit on helping students learn how to ask the right questions. Most of the time though, the book doesn't go far beyond basic, common pedagogy, and some of the claims rest on weak examples of application(the bane of most professional development literature and presenters). For example, one of the core tenants is to "entice" the students at the beginning of class, but the best strategies offered to do this are cliches like 'make predictions about the passage based on these key words.' I'd recommend this book for new teachers only. |
