I started out really liking this. I had been wanting to read it forever. But, ultimately, I felt that there was way too much theorizing without enough solid reading to support the theory. I felt like Kaussen was making the works she analyzed fit her theory more than crafting a theory around the works she was analyzing. Random notes Question: Why is nationalism always seen as a bad thing for nations/peoples who are not part of the traditional centers? p. 116: Kaussen evokes the "race-blind universalism" of the Haitian Revoution.

this was a good read. it was a bit confusing with so many characters having similar names but I did enjoy it.
