Review # 1 was written on 2011-01-24 00:00:00 Barry Sheppard I read this as part of my library's series with the Kansas Humanities Council. The topic is pre-Civil War. As a Kansan I've often heard of John Brown, but didn't know much about him. I did have a Kansas history class back in junior high, but I don't remember much on him. I have an ex-boyfriend from Missouri that thought Kansans worshiped John Brown. This book is pretty much a summary of all the books written on John Brown until the publication date. There might be a bit of commentary on some of the books, but doesn't encourage you to read more on him. I'm going to a lecture on this in a couple of days and if my mind changes I will reflect it in here. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-12-04 00:00:00 Paul Lemieux I started reading this over 2 years ago. I finally finished. It is an amazing book, well-researched and really takes you into the world of the southern slaveowner, as well as to northern rivals. It is a dense book with many quotes. Four chapters in particular were outstanding: Chapter 4, 15, 16, and 20. Provided tremendous insights into what seems to be the heart of the war for Southern Independence: namely the battle over the Bible. While slavery was the issue, the cultural differences between the North and South were vast and differences over the authority of the Scriptures were sources of the these differences. In many ways, the Civil War was a religious war. |
