Somehow in all my research on the Civil War from a New Jersey slant, I had missed this book till now! I found it to be well-researched and -written. It was stronger on the politics of the era than on the military aspects of the war. But I feel I have a good grasp on the fighting, and I learned a lot about the political figures behind the scenes that gives me a better grasp of how New Jersey reacted before, during, and after the war. If the topic laid out in the title interests you, this book will reward your attention.

I used this book mostly for genealogical research, but it gives a good overview of the New Jersey Regiments of the Civil War. Although no battles were fought in New Jersey, many of our men fought in this war.
