Great book. 139,000 words, no footnotes. Download the book here: I really enjoyed this book, even though it took ten months to finish. It's loaded with insightful info, fun gossip, and great, often very funny, lines or observations from informants. Ullmann writes crisp prose, though Chapter 11, at 23,000 words (by far the book's longest), has the feeling of being harried, as if undigested material is being splattered on the page in order to meet a deadline. But that's a minor complaint. Even this sub-par chapter has info & funny lines to impart to readers. About the funniness: There are numerous scenes in this book when Ullmann points out ironical outcomes, unintended consequences—which I thought was great. I ought to think about them more. I doubt that I'll reread this book en toto, but I took a ton of notes that I'm sure to revisit & reread. I'm interested in Stockman as a thinker. Ullmann's thick description of him and of the Reagan administration were very interesting, even today, in 2019. Stockman himself comes off looking mostly good, even very admirable at times, when he's not occasionally displaying the character traits of a know-it-all jerk. I would have liked to have learned more about Stockman's relationship with Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Owen Ullmann appeared on C-Span to promote this book. The interview is worth watching but, since I dislike most questions from phone-in callers, I wish Brian Lamb had kept the discussion in-house and had posed all of the questions to Ullmann. Watch the interview here: Ullmann tells Lamb that his book's publication was timed to coincide with Stockman's own book The Triumph of Politics (1996). I've read that book and think it's inferior to Ullmann's.
