Type of Reference: Handbook Call Number: 200 B4227h 1995 Brief description: This handbook to the Catholic faith focuses on Catholic doctrine and stays clear of moral issues that are deemed controversial by others. The handbook is set up to present a biblical background of each issue, the history of the theology for the issue, the teaching of the church on the issue, ecumenical perspectices on the issue, and systematic reflections within the church on the issues. Citation for Review: Izbiki, T. M. (1995, December). [Review of the book Handbook of Catholic theology]. Choice. Criteria: Content Scope: The purpose of this handbook is to inform the reader of issues and the accompanying doctrine of the Catholic faith. Due to the complex language structure, high school students and above are the target audience for this handbook. Accuracy, Authority, and Bias: Due to the nature of the handbook, there is an inherent bias. However, given the handbook is to inform the reader of the Catholic religion, this bias is understood. It is noted that several of the contributors to the text are not Catholic. Arrangement and Presentation: Each of the entries are arranged with a five-fold approach addressing the five topics in the description. Summaries of contemporary thinking on certain issues are also discussed within the text. A bibliography referencing other important works or translations is also offered in the handbook. Relation to Similar Works: This handbook can be used in conjunction with encyclopedias and certain dictionaries within the reference collection. Timeliness and Permanence: The handbook does fall outside of the 10 year recommended age for reference materials of this type. However, the handbook focuses solely on doctrine rather than moral issues. Due to this focused area, the permanence of the topics within the handbook are not likely to change. Accessibility and Diversity: This handbook presents information on the Catholic faith. Due to the scope of the handbook, readers with diverse or oppositional views will find this reading unappealing. Cost: $53.00
