I couldn't resist buying Weeki Wachee city of mermaids, A History of One of Florida's oldest Roadside Attractions. I had wanted to see the famed mermaids as a young girl but it wasn't until I was an adult in Florida with my husband to view a shuttle launch that on a whim we took a side trip and found ourselves in the front row of the underground theater before thick glass separating us from the crystal clear freshwater mermaid spring. It was not Weeki Wachee's heyday and we were surrounded by little girls but it didn't matter; the mermaid show demonstrated amazing underwater athleticism, stamina, and charm and that was enough. We also took the jungle cruise and viewed areas where a favorite TV series of ours, Maximum Bob, based on an Elmore Leonard novel, was filmed. Weeki Wachee has connections to quite a few popular and iconic entertainers and movies from Johnny Weissmuiler's Tarzan to The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The first victim in the movie Jaws was a former Weeki Wachee mermaid. I did not think that a road side attraction could rate 295 pages, but Lu Vickers's books is not only beautiful to look at, it tells a fascinating history. The mermaids are a special sisterhood and many of them contributed photos and stories. If you have a sense of whimsy, an appreciation of kitsch, or history of Florida, you'd probably enjoy this book.

A fascinating read, especially if you're a Floridian.
