Rereading this play has once again convinced me of its greatness. The wonder of it, what sets it apart from the many absurdist plays of the period (most written after El Publico), is that the absurdity doesn't underline the meaninglessness of things; it brings home the uncanny images lurking inside of us. Lorca's genius is always, in all his works, to bring out startling images that seem entirely crazy or absurd, only to be revealed as somehow deeply and powerfully right. That the uncanny is very canny. I first read El Publico sometime around 2011-2012, I think the summer of 2011, but it's hard to remember. It really shocked me. It also really opened me up. It gave me a taste for highly non-literal drama and storytelling. It's wonderful to exult in the sheer bizarreness of some of the scenes; but its only worth laughing at because it's also deeply moving. In this second reading of the play, I was surprised at how much more sense the play makes to me. Some of the dialogue that used to seem obscure is now easily comprehensible - maybe that's my growth showing. As well, the homosexual elements of the drama, which seemed pretty important before, now seems to be the whole play. Practically every scene revolves around it. This is an astonishing and wonderful play. I recommend it to everyone I know.
