Who doesn't love staring dreamily at photos of Venice? You would think it would be impossible to take bad photographs but for me this author has done that. A lot of the photos were dark or filled with shadows which hid so many details in a scene. Certain photographers can make not this guy though even his night photos were not the best. He took photos through windows which were flawed due to the reflections in the glass. I think the photos that I really disliked was the rooftop views. It is fascinating to see Venice from above but there are just many things to see no matter which direction you face. When he focused on something like a church roof, the canal, then it was a bit better then staring at the roofs over and over though from that view so much detail was lost especially with shadows. I had to check the date of this book because these photos feel almost outdated compared to modern photo books who's photos are more crisp and clean then these. There are some decent photos but not enough to make me love this book.

Our National Parks is a collection of essays that John Muir wrote for The Atlantic. I agree with many reviewers who have described Muir as "verbose." However, hidden among the pages of botanical descriptions are delightful stories about his encounters with bears, hermits, earthquakes, avalanches, and even a tired mule. My favorite story, when Muir tried to convince Ralph Waldo Emerson to camp with him in Yosemite, is the source of his famous quote, "The mountains are calling." Anyone who has visited---or plans to visit---Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Yosemite, or Sequoia would enjoy reading these essays.
