Причиной был не только размер книги в 1,000 страниц, ибо в книге много фотографий, но сложность самого текста. Автор не просто даёт историческую справку, но довольно детально описывает технические/проектные характеристики зданий. Эти детали зданий мне и на русском языке не понятны, а тут они ещё к тому же включены в сам текст, а не выведены в качестве отдельно расположенного текста. Однако нужно также признать, что, не смотря на сложность текста, книга уникальна. Это что-то типа Гомбриха только от мира архитектуры (хотя и в книге Гомбриха присутствует архитектура). Автор начинает с каменного века и ведёт читателя через все эпохи и через все страны мира. Тем самым у читателя появляется цельная картина того, как менялась архитектура во всём мире от века к веку и от страны к стране. К примеру, интересным наблюдением будет то, что чем ближе стояли города к арабскому миру, тем более они становились на них похоже, не меняя при этом свою христианскую основу. Другими словами, архитектура, это не изолированное проектирование построек, но глобализированное и при этом сохраняет свою идентификацию с культурой и историей. Итак, как я написал выше, автор начинает свою книгу с самых первых построек, которые были обнаружены археологами, и реконструкции которых можно найти в книге. Нужно признаться, автор довольно подробно пишет о самых первых зданиях человечества и делает это довольно подробно и интересно. Дальше история архитектуры идёт по давно заданному направлению через Месопотамию, Египет, Грецию, Персию и Рим. Отдельно хочу отметить главы про Египет, Ассирию и Индию. Я мало что знаю про Индию и возможно именно из-за этого меня больше всего потрясли древние сооружения в Индии, но они действительно удивительные и автор довольно подробно описывает архитектуру древней Индии. В целом, те, кто хорошо знакомы с книгами по искусству, примерно представляют, как выглядит книга от Египта, Древней Греции и Рима до средневековых замков и готических соборов. Да, тут ничего сенсационного не будет, но, тем не менее, автор описывает такое огромное количество архитектурных сооружений, что книга превращается и в книгу по истории. Плюс, учитывая размер книги, автор опишет все знаменитые древние сооружения в мире, включая и два российских явления (московский ансамбль Кремля, а также стиль куполов церквей, который обозначается как луковицы). Тем не менее, основное внимание будет уделено архитектуре расположенной на европейском континенте, а также в Месопотамии и Индии. Ближе к концу книги, т.е. описывая 19 век, автор включит в этот список и США. Лично мне показалось, что автор уделил мало внимания Японии. Возможно, это связанно с тем, что мало что сохранилось с тех времён. В любом случаи, книга описывает не только все основные сооружения в мире, но также упоминает о самых известных современных сооружениях по всему миру, т.е. приступая к описанию современной архитектуры, автор постарался отразить всю палитру вариантов на всех континентах. Вторым важным моментом книги является технические детали, которые сопутствуют тексту и о которых я упомянул в самом начале. Т.е. как соединялись те или иные части строение, крепления, из какого материала было создано строение и все остальные важные, но профессионально направленные детали, которые будут понятны и интересны специалистам или людям, учащимся на архитектурном факультете. И эта часть книги мне была скучна, не интересна и сильно замедляло чтение. Для меня это стало главным недостатком книги. В остальном же книга уникальна и будет отличным вариантом для знакомства с мировой архитектурой. Да, это лишь знакомство с каждым отдельным направлением, ибо невозможно написать полную и всестороннюю книгу на тему мировой архитектуры. Поэтому эта книга, прежде всего, знакомит читателя с общей картиной, описывая основные стили, направления и строения. За более детальной информацией необходимо будет обратиться к специализированной литературе. Ведь на тему архитектуры Индии можно написать не одну книгу. Да и современная архитектура предлагаем множество разнообразнейших стилей. И последнее. Книга показывает, насколько сложна архитектура не только в плане создания конструкции, но в плане создания концепта. И что за строением может скрываться не просто здание, а целое видение мира. It took me six months to read this book. The reason was not only the size of the book of 1,000 pages, because the book has a lot of pictures, but the complexity of the text itself. The author does not just give historical information but describes the technical/design characteristics of the buildings in detail. These details of the buildings are not clear to me even in Russian, and here they are also included in the text itself, rather than displayed as a separate text. However, I must also admit that, despite the complexity of the text, the book is unique. It is something like Gombrich's from the world of architecture (although there is also architecture in Gombrich's book). The author begins with the Stone Age and leads the reader through all eras and through all countries of the world. This gives the reader a complete picture of how architecture has changed around the world from century to century and from country to country. For example, an interesting observation is that the closer the cities stood to the Arab world, the more they became similar to them without changing their Christian basis. In other words, architecture is not an isolated design of buildings but is globalized and yet retains its identification with culture and history. So, as I wrote above, the author begins his book with the very first structures that have been discovered by archaeologists, and whose reconstructions can be found in the book. It must be admitted that the author writes quite extensively about the earliest buildings of mankind, and does so in some detail and interestingly. Further, the history of architecture goes in a long-established direction through Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Persia, and Rome. I would like to mention the chapters on Egypt, Assyria, and India. I don't know much about India, and maybe that's why I was most impressed by the ancient structures in India, but they are really amazing and the author describes the architecture of ancient India in great detail. In general, those who are familiar with art books have a rough idea of what the book looks like from Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Rome to medieval castles and Gothic cathedrals. Yes, there won't be anything sensational here, but nevertheless, the author describes so many architectural structures that the book turns into a history book as well. Plus, given the size of the book, the author will describe all the famous ancient constructions in the world, including two Russian phenomena (the Moscow Kremlin ensemble, as well as the style of the domes of churches, which is designated as onions). However, the focus will be on architecture located on the European continent as well as in Mesopotamia and India. Toward the end of the book, i.e., the 19th century, the author will add the United States to the list. Personally, I felt that the author paid little attention to Japan. Perhaps this is due to the fact that not much has survived from those times. In any case, the book describes not only all the major structures in the world but also mentions the most famous modern buildings around the world, that is, coming to the description of modern architecture, the author has tried to reflect the whole palette of options on all continents. The second important point of the book is the technical details that accompany the text, which I mentioned at the beginning. That is, how these or other parts of the structure were connected, fixtures, what material was used to create the structure, and all other important but professionally-oriented details that will be understandable and interesting to specialists or people studying at the Faculty of Architecture. And this part of the book was boring to me, not interesting, and slowed me down a lot. For me, this was the main drawback of the book. Otherwise, the book is unique and will be an excellent option for an introduction to world architecture. Yes, it is only an introduction to each particular movement because it is impossible to write a complete and comprehensive book on the subject of world architecture. Therefore, this book, first of all, acquaints the reader with the general picture by describing the main styles, directions, and structures. For more detailed information it will be necessary to refer to specialized literature. After all, more than one book could be written on the subject of Indian architecture. Even modern architecture offers a great variety of styles. One last thing. The book shows how complex architecture is, not only in terms of construction but in terms of concept creation, that a structure can mean not just a building but a whole vision of the world.

Review # 2 was written on 2010-02-21 00:00:00 Les Herrick Full disclosure: this was a book to skim, not read. I imagine it was created as a college textbook, with all that implies. Anyway, I enjoyed seeing the evolution of medieval stone villages to Florentine palaces to Turkish mosques. Buildings are fascinating things, and as varied as the imaginations of their creators (as well as the treasuries of their commissioners). Good browsing material here, thanks largely to the intriguing photos and drawings.
