Ross, L. T., & Mimms, K. A. (1997). African American almanac: day-by-day Black history. Jefferson, NC: McFarland. Review: Reference Type: Almanac Content Scope: The almanac includes events associated with African American persons that have had a significant impact on other African Americans. People from other races who have been important to the African American race, such as John Brown and Abraham Lincoln, are also included. Accuracy, Authority, Bias: Leon Ross, co-author of this book, is a lecturer on African American history. Kenneth Mimms, other author, is a journalist. Arrangement and Presentation: Events in this book are organized by the day of the year (January 1, January 2), and events are arranged chronologically by year under each day. Relation to similar works: There is not another resource in the collection which provides the same information. Timeliness/Permanence: Although this book was published in 1997, it contains information about the history of African Americans that will appeal to readers for years to come. Accessibility/Diversity: The books is accessible to the majority of student readers. Cost: $29.95

This was an outstanding book from start to finish. The author spells out diplomatic action and, more importantly, the economic causes for the actions of the Barbary Coast States, England, Spain and France. Although the most prominent person in the narrative is Washington, Reuter does a fine job of integrating the lives of the secretaries of state and other diplomats.
