Review # 1 was written on 2018-05-12 00:00:00 John Corrigan It has a couple of stories that worth the read and that reflect how grey and dull the communist era was in Romania, the rest are just verbal diarrhea, long sentences, endless paragraph of just rhetoric or dull stream of consciousness type of narrative, providing little or no detail regarding the context of which these stories take place or any particular detail -besides some local names of the characters or places for obvious reasons- that may give the reader a picture of that time (especially if this book takes part of a collection called "Writings from an unbound Europe"), it's just plain standard post-modern literature in its tone and lack of plot or content that can take place either in Bucharest or any other part of the world. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-08-12 00:00:00 Tom Soule Edith Wharton wrote with ease of New York's high society, of which she was a part, but she could also portray the struggles of the lower classes with effect. The Bunner Sisters is the story of two sisters barely making ends meet in a small shop in their neighborhood. But they are happy with their companionship and their routine. Things change forever, and for the worse, when they meet a local clockmaker. Wharton reminds us that when you make poor choices, the results can be devastating, regardless of your status in society. |
