Review # 1 was written on 2021-02-06 00:00:00 Gail Carpenter תקופה ארוכה קראתי את הספר, לא בגלל שהוא לא טוב. נהפוך הוא, זוהי יצירת מופת, מחושבת ומתוכננת כמעט חתרנית, שבה הסופר מוביל את הקורא אל לב ליבן של המחלוקות העוסקות בדמותו ובתקופת שילטונו של דוד המלך ויתרה מכך, אף מצליח לחשוף באותו המחיר את ערוותו של המלך החכם באנשים, שלמה. זהו אחד מהספרים הנוקבים שקראתי, ואף על פי שמדובר בפרוזה ולא בספר מחקרי, הוא מצליח בדרכו ליצור את האפקט הרצוי ולערער את המיתוסים האופפים את דמותו של דוד המלך. חייבת לציין שהגעתי עם רקע לספר, לאחר קריאה בספריה של יוכי ברנדס "מלכים ג'" ו- "שבע אימהות" בהם היא מציגה את הדמויות של המלכים דוד ושלמה באופן ביקורתי. על העלילה ניתן לקרוא ולהרחיב בערך הרלוונטי בוויקיפדיה איתן האזרחי, חכם וסופר, נקרא לחצר המלך שלמה בירושלים כדי לערוך את "הדוח האחד והיחיד, האמיתי והמהימן" אודות אביו, דוד. המלך ויועציו מבקשים מאיתן לכתוב דוח שיאפשר לטשטש אירועים ופעילויות שנויים במחלוקת ובעלי אופי שלילי על המלך דוד. לצורך כך, הם מאפשרים לאיתן גישה לתיעוד ולאנשים שיכולים לשפוך אור על האירועים השנויים במחלוקת, יחד עם זאת הם כובלים את ידיו בצורות שונות: כולל איומים על חייו וגזל פילגשו, והוא נאלץ באופן גאוני למדי, להלך בין הטיפות ומחד להציג את האירועים בצורה שתספק את המלך ויועציו ומאידך להעביר את המסרים תוך שהוא לא מועל באמת הפנימית שלו והגילויים שמצא. לאורך כל הספר שוטח הסופר את המעללים, המזימות וההסתאבות של השילטון. דמויותיהם של דוד ושלמה מוצגות באור מטריד ביותר, מכוער ולכל הפחות לא מחמיא, כאשר קוראים על מעשי הרצח, הגזל, הביזה והנוולה של שניהם. בסוף הספר לקורא נותר לתהות על התהילה לה זכו שתי דמויות אלה בבימת הזיכרון ההיסטו הקולקטיבי: דוד כגיבור ישראל, המלך הראשון שאיחד את השבטים תחת שלטונו, ושלמה כאדם החכם באנשים כאשר העוולות והמוסר המפוקפק המצדיק את פעילויותיהם מטשטשים ברקע וכל מי שמנסה להציף אותם זוכה לביקורת (ראו ביקורות על ספרה מלכים ג' מאת יוכי ברנדס). השפה של הספר לא תמיד פשוטה וצריך להתרגל לסגנון הכתיבה ולשפה. יחד עם זאת המאמץ מתגמל והששקעה שווה.

Review # 2 was written on 2019-12-17 00:00:00 Blake Herrington This story is an alternative, satirical take on the Old Testament account of King David (I Samuel through I Kings, chapter 2). Many decades ago, I earned an advanced degree in theology and Biblical studies. Before reading this book, I refreshed myself on the latest archaeology. As Israel Finkelstein and Neil Asher Silberman observed in their scholarly work, David and Solomon: "we can now say' as we will argue in considerable detail throughout this book' that many of the famous episodes in the biblical story of David and Solomon are fictions, historically questionable, or highly exaggerated." Although, later in their book, they have to admit that the only actual archeological reference to David is to the "House of David" from a dig in 1993. That's it!? Not surprisingly, Protestant fundamentalists and Likud Zionists want to make much of this one reference than is justified. Revisiting the Old Testament was a reminder of what a primitive document it is, full of fables and, more seriously, fostering violence in both ancient and modern Israel (kill "every man, woman and child" in the name of Yahweh) and paralyzing apocalyptic fantasies from Christian fundamentalists. I say paralyzing because if Jesus is to return any minute (as he has been expected to do so for two thousand years now) then why bother with the stewardship of the Earth or anything else long term? The novel itself is a lot of fun. It's written in a mock-formal style. The author did his own research. The premise is that King Solomon assigns a scribe named Ethan to compile and write an account of Solomon's father, King David, in part to justify Solomon's own rule. Needless to say, Ethan comes up with a very different story than what's in in the Old Testament. There is no ebook available for this volume, but it was relatively easy to find a used paperback copy at a reasonable price.
