Review # 1 was written on 2018-01-03 00:00:00 Dallas Norman This was an admirably short and concise introduction to the topic. Even in the two hundred pages or so, it managed to cover the meat of the matter, in sufficient detail, without falling troupe to the usual suspects of Islamophobia or Orientalism. The book starts of mentioning the three pillars of din (faith), dawla (State) and Dunya (the world and how we interpret it) in Muslim political thought. It does a comparative study of the political traditions of Islam, Christianity and Judaism. It does a historical analysis as well, tracing the growth of fundamentalism and its accompanying factors. Finally, it rounds of by briefly outlining the philosophy of thinkers like Al-Banna, Qutb, Khomenei and the circumstances they emerged. A good book to read on the Muslim approach to politics. A little generalized at times but does the job. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-04-13 00:00:00 Troy Torgrimson An excellent quick summary of Islamicate politics and political thought. There is a bit of polite "niceness" here and there ("we worship the same god", that sort of thing) but overall it is neither apologetic, nor polemical or unfair. Worth a read. |
