Review # 1 was written on 2012-09-21 00:00:00 Theresa Rhodes All of the articles are so relevant to Chicago and the nation even 2015, especially after the most recent disaster of a mayoral election in Chicago. There was a lot that I agreed with in McClain's commentary (the systemic racism in Chicago, addressing poverty, importance of education). It would have been interesting to read her thoughts today and see if she'd have such strong and unpopular opinions on matters like the state of Black folks and the criticisms the community would rather deflect as "just racism" which is what I pulled from a lot of he articles. I definitely enjoyed reading it as a Chicagoan and a CPS graduate. It put so much in context and it made me realize how much we were not taught about Mayor Harold Washington and most mayors in general. |
