Its primary purpose is as a bibliographic reference and in this it really does excel, not only in its comprehensiveness but also in its ease of study. Indeed, by including four separate indices sorted by author, title, subject and chronology it makes short work of locating what you're seeking and also makes it easy to browse the titles of other books written around the same time - invaluable for those wishing to research an era rather than a title or author. As well as the bibliographic listings there are chapters dedicated to discussion of associated subjects and publications too - the history of the publication of the books, professional journals and the paper pattern industry, journals (with subsections on American, English, Fur and Undergarments), journal articles, costume & dance, dolls, folk & national dress, footwear, millinery, wig making & hair and commercial pattern companies, periodicals and catalogues. There is an appendix of pattern companies, publishers and publications and the four indices mentioned above. I bought it primarily as a reference for dating the books I own which do not themselves bear a publication date but I can see it contains very much more than that and am looking forward to giving it a much more thorough read.
