Review # 1 was written on 2012-09-10 00:00:00 Reinder Vermeiren Sklansky traces the ideological transformation accompanying the transformation from a household economy to a market economy and the rise of industrial capitalism, wherein the tradition of political economy was intellectually reworked into a new "social psychology," that emphasized social relationships over economic competition. This is an intricate and deep academic work that is nonetheless readable and coherent. Sklansky does a good job of explaining the evolution of each ideological transformation, so that his non economic-historian readers can follow along with relative ease. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-12-11 00:00:00 Joe Donoghue A very able synthesis, though it doesn't quite deliver on the pointed and (I felt) exciting promises of its introductory characterization of the period. Of course, it's almost impossible not to be overwhelmed by the amount of material Licht tries to cover. Many of the chapters would make for excellent readings for an undergraduate course. |
