Review # 1 was written on 2013-08-13 00:00:00 Jared Folse Detailed history of men's roles in (mostly hospital) childbirth, examining their physical moves, and the space accompanying thsoe moves. Leavitt focuses on privilege, power, and perspective, her "three P's" throughout, relying on men's own stories of their childbirth experiences, along with various other historical sources and a generous helping/unpacking of pop culture television references to men vis-a-vis childbirth like the Lucille Ball Show and Friends. Accessible and smart. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-04-17 00:00:00 Judith Gramm Judith Walzer Leavitt, MAT'65, AM'66, PhD'75 Author From our pages (Nov-Dec/09): "In the 1940s expectant fathers would sit in a hospital waiting room, far from the action, and nervously await news of their new son or daughter. By the 1980s, however, most hospitals allowed fathers into the delivery rooms. Historian Leavitt traces the increasing involvement of fathers in the childbirth process through personal letters and interviews, as well as hospital archives and popular culture." |
