Review of Sky Woman Laronde, L.(2005). Sky Woman: Indigenous women who have shaped, moved or inspired us. Penticton, B.C. : Theytus Books Ltd. Why the book was chosen The reason I chose this book is that my Native Ojibwe name is Sky Woman. Sky Woman: Woman Who Have Shaped, Moved or Inspired Us is a very powerful title. This book is an inspiration to me, I started to read it and the variety of poems and stories are beautiful. Summary/Overview of book This book has many different artists who share many works of art. All the woman featured are of Native Ancestry. The book is divided into sections, first with poetry, stories and then art biographies. It is amazing. What I know of the story Sky Woman from the book is that the world was created and populated by Sky Woman who fell down to earth through a hole in the clouds, and she descended into the human world, with love, talent, and power. This book gives voice to Native Woman across Canada, USA, Mexico, and across the seas to the Pacific Islands and Japan. I will feature three Canadian women, one poet, one storyteller, and one artist. Nicola Campbell is from British Columbia and she is attending the University of British Columbia. Debra Isabel Huron is Metis, from Wikiwemikong First Nation on Manitoulin Island. Daphne Odjig, also from Wikiwemikong First Nation, is a renowned artist who has contributed 60 years of her talent. Specific quotes from text Excerpt from Nicola Campbell a poem named, "Buckle Up Shoes" "She'd twirl by herself in the living room to the Beatles and Wanda Jackson. when she thought no one was watching I'd peek around the corner 4 feet tall maybe with moccasins on and whispy braids." Excerpt from Debra Isabel Huron, "My aunt's kindness made a difference" " A cigarette. a cup of tea, and that'll do me." "With these words, my Aunt Nell would end a meal." "What can can we learn from another person's life? What lessons does an older woman with blood ties teach a girl? I don't have immediate answers to those questions. I only know that I would choose charcoal if I were to draw a portrait of my Aunt Nell, and I would make sure to blend soft shades of grey against the edges of the hard life she led." Daphne Odjig See attached black and white samples of art named, "Dream Goddess" and "Goddess of Yellow Moon" My questions, inferences, visual images, thoughts, reactions, feelings, opinions I am overwhelmed by the number of Native Woman who are delivering a powerful resource for us. This book just instills an incredible amount of awe. I want to be everything, a writer, an artist, and poet. Now! This is the reaction I have to the book Sky Woman. I just have to quote, Gregory Scofield, he says, " A-haw, kinanaskomtin! What a gift it is to behold the words of these Sky Women, nimisak, my sisters both young and old. Tapwe, these are essential stories of resistance and survival, celebration and honour." (back cover). Re evaluating the story with reference to value, ideals, beliefs and/or institutions of Aboriginal peoples. The woman are honoured, valued once again. Somehow I know that it is the voice regained, the courage that gives way to women, driven perhaps by wanting happiness in life for her children (all children of the world). Many women, especially Indigenous women, feel that they do not have a chance in the world even to try to compete. The women in the book represents us all. Either we are in the story, the poem or artists, pictures. It is an Aboriginal value that we look to the female to nourish and nurture other people, and the book Sky Woman: Indigenous women who have shaped, moved or inspired us is one way to do it. My transformed thoughts: What is not written in the story but now I am thinking about... Sky Woman Sisters I love you and how you instil inside of me the desire to be more than I am right now. I understand that I am in the book already, so I just need to get moving, follow my goals and succeed because "we" have made history already.

"But even if you are an asshole, a Harley can be personality spackle in that it'll cover over any deficiencies. That's why balding midlife-crisis boys get them." -erika lopez (page 235).
