A fascinating argument derived from a significant book. The key argument in this book is that informal learning - the musical knowledge attained outside the classroom - can positively impact on music inside the classroom. While this argument may seem self evident, this book places considered attention to both listening and composition. This is a detailed ethnographic study that shows - with precision - the interface moments in teaching and learning where popular music and classical music align. The distinction between these categories has always been arbitrary and artificial. This book shows how learning, teaching, experience and knowledge can conflate to build musical education in our schools.

This book reads like a dissertation and can be a bit repetitive at times, but offers a realistic approach that goes beyond ideas/philosophy yet challenges the mainstream approaches to music education.
