Review # 1 was written on 2011-07-25 00:00:00 Charles Mcdonald Rating: 3 1/2 Some worthy selections here that I wouldn't have read otherwise. Though it's a bit too excerpt-driven for my liking. Favorites: "Writers in Hollywood" - Raymond Chandler "Sunset Boulevard" excerpt - Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, D.M. Marshman Jr. Kate Braverman's "Palm Latitudes" is an excerpt from a novel, and it seems like the latter might be better. Jack Webb's "The Badge" is an excerpt with some interesting Black Dahlia stuff. It was Sunday - not a day, but rather a gap between two other days. - F. Scott Fitzgerald, "Crazy Sunday" Even in spring, the smog sits on the city like moldy orange juice. - Oscar Zeta Acosta, "The Revolt of the Cockroach People" |
Review # 2 was written on 2008-05-27 00:00:00 Robert Minard Nice compilation of short stories that pays homage to the city of angels. Selections vary from landscape descriptions to industry social blunders to The Black Dahlia case. Writers include Fitzgerald, West, Miller, and Shepard. Am now prompted to read the Fante's Ask The Dust in its entirety. |
