Gorey openly referred to himself as 'an extravagant admirer' of the work of both Lear and Carroll and that comes through in this little collection. You would think that no one could illustrate Lear except the man himself but Gorey embraces the nonsensical as something utterly normative. This slim, landscaped collection of two narrative nonsense poems tells the story of a group of odd people (the Jumblies) who set off on a great saga. When they return to retell their story, they leave behind a heart-broken character called 'The Dong' *steady now* who pines hard for his lost love. A hundred years or so separates the poem from Gorey's illustrations but the marriage here between the rhythmic verse and odd, framed illustrations is one that is built to last. Wonderful.

i have decided that 'the jumblies' is the best edward gorey (by way of edward lear) ever. loveliest drawings and: "they went to sea in a sieve they did, in a sieve they went to sea: in spite of all their friends could say, on a winter's morn, on a stormy day, in a sieve they went to sea! .... they sailed to the western sea, they did, to a land all covered with trees, and the bought an owl, and a useful cart, and a pound of rice, and a cranberry tart, and a hive of silvery bees. and they bought a pig, and some green jack-daws, and a lovely monkey with lollipop paws, and forty bottles of ring-bo-ree, and no end of stilton cheese. far and few, far and few, are the lands where the jumblies live; their heads are green, and their hands are blue, and the went to sea in a sieve. ...."
