A good introduction to modern body armour. The first part showing the origins of the steel helmet and modern metal body armor in the trenches of WWI is particularly interesting. The text is clear and the pictures are good (albeit in B&W only) and goes on through the different phases of the flak jackets. First in Korea, the first war with a widespread use of balistic jackets. The plates are as good as Osprey always does, including different eras such as a Senegalese artilleryman in Dien Bien Phu, Soviets in Afghanistan and the British SAS. My only complaint is that this subject was never revisited in the other series.

Another high quality Osprey book on a very obscure but interesting group of men at arms. Mr. Scurr does a very good job of keeping the text clear and concise, yet provides a tremendous amount of detail. The photos are excellent and add significant value to the book. Mr. Fosten's illustration plates are top notch, and make this book a "must have" for anyone interested in painting miniatures of these units. Good detail, accurate coloration, and enough angles to give a painter more than enough information to make their figures look authentic. I would also like to add that the Author's Notes up front include some terrific references; this is a behavior I wished all authors would follow. Overall, I would grade this a 4.5 stars, with the extra 0.5 for the references.
