This is a hidden gem from a forgotten golden age of American intellectual achievement. While this book is not well known, it is an important read for any student of human civilization who wishes to look at the big picture. I had already developed some of my own ideas in this area, but this book helped to clarify and refine some of them. Each chapter is brimming with fascinating knowledge and insights from different eras of Western Civilization. PS: For those who don't know, Brooks Adams was the Great-grandson of John Adams (2nd President of United States) and grandson of John Quincy Adams (6th President of the United States) PPS: In order to better appreciate this book, I would recommend readers have read or be familiar with Gibbon's "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". Also be familiar with the religious culture of European history through its various phases: Dark Ages -> Middle Ages -> Renaissance. I had recently taken British Literature 1 and found it to be very useful in gleaning extra appreciation for what I was reading.

The dance of church, state and capital and how different classes of men rise and fall in the tango.
