Review # 1 was written on 2014-12-05 00:00:00 Jack Harris An excellent book for those interested in first hand accounts of infantry life and combat on World War II's Western Front. The book's organization was a weak point from my perspective. Accounts are organized by unit, which means that multi-unit actions are often covered in a dozen men's individual accounts spread throughout the book. Only in the two most intensive combat actions and a supplemental, topical chapter are accounts grouped together so that we get multiple viewpoints of the same action or topic in one place. Also be warned, some men's accounts are grim, and focus on how they were badly injured and suffered years of pain since. i.e. these are not strictly accounts of historic events, but of personal experiences. Yet that's the great strength of this collection, you feel as though you are sitting at the author's elbow in a veterans' gathering discussing :"those days". That has its down sides, but the upside, for those interested in the experiences of veterans of this theater, are great. Another advantage is that veteran's wives are often involved in the "discussion" giving witness to their experiences on th ehome front before, during and after the war.

Review # 2 was written on 2016-04-19 00:00:00 Eric Ugalde I only read portions of the book, paying particular attention to chapter 4, The Prisoners of War. The chapter gave first hand accounts from three E Company survivors, one of which is my neighbor's father who just celebrated his 100th birthday. It is an interesting oral history told by the men who served in World War II.
