Fantastic overview of black Baptists in America, including missions, education, denominations, black Baptist women, social activism, politics, and civil rights. Particularly strong on the 19th century. Tends to skim over larger sections of 20th century history ending in the 1980s (published in 1985). This book is a treasure trove of Baptist figures that are worth knowing. This story is an essential part of Baptist history, church history, and American history, and any attempt to tell those histories without it must be woefully incomplete. Of particular interest is his treatment of the relationship between black and white Baptists throughout the years, sometimes in fruitful partnership, oftentimes not. Has a good bibliography, index, and footnotes, and can serve as a decent entryway into some good primary sources.

Good writing, however, there was no mention of 2nd Baptist in Detroit which was extremely significant in the abolition movement and the history of Baptists in America.
