Review # 1 was written on 2015-11-30 00:00:00 Paul Marsh Although Rappapport does not offer a general theory of religion in this book, I think anyone interested in religious studies could benefit from reading his essays. Dating from 1979, Rappaport obviously does not use current evolutionary approaches to culture. But that does not mean that his treatment of e.g. function and meaning of ritual, and how both relate to each other does not offer insights that can trigger your own thinking about religion and culture in general, on the contrary! |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-09-28 00:00:00 Ronny Davis I won't deny that Newman's writing, though ever clear, is anything other than slow-going, packed as it is with serious, thoroughly-covered thought. Even as a philosopher, it is true, at times he simply blocks off avenues of investigation as being assumed for the sake of his argument and the philospher-reader simply has to take his word for it in continuing on to the points Newman wishes to make. But the points he makes are worth it; or I at least found them so. It was the first, cover-to-cover philosophical read I managed since finishing my B.A. and it kept me to the course eagerly. |
