The Christmas stories I grew up with all but exclusively featured white characters and always began from the presumption that the spirit of Christmas was inherently good. All characters needed to do was discover (or rediscover) the Christmas spirit to be redeemed. This collection challenges that underlying presumption. Many of these stories suggest that Christmas brings out the worst as well as the best in people and that the Christmas spirit does not resolve systemic injustice. Overall, a powerful and convicting book.

11 stories written between 1880 and 1916 by August M. Hodges, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Ida Wells Barnett and others. (The editor includes some biographical info about these authors.) Mostly cute little Christmas stories and nice pieces of Americana from this time period. (Warning one lynching story is unpleasant). The usual p.c. introductions may be of interest to some but others might prefer to enjoy the stories on their own merits. Black and white illustrations.
