Helpful insights. Brain Colless and Peter Donovan, ed. Religion in New Zealand. Palmerston North: Dunmore Press, 1980. E.g. Differences in how the contextualisation of the Gospel and the Nicean creed were to be applied resulted in division between the Anglican bishops and indigenous Maōri, as exemplified by the tensions resulting from Ratana and his creed. (p40-41) The contribution of Anglican women to New Zealand is evident (although not always acknowledged) in the lives of Marianne Williams, her sister-in-law Jane Williams, Sarah Selwyn, Mary Martin, Caroline Abraham and Elizabeth Colenso. These diligent women not only looked after their immediate families, taught their children, and worked with Maōri women, but also completely ran the mission stations when their husbands were away. Miss Hannah More was one of the most well-known poets and playwrights of late the 18th/early 19th century England. For several years, she enjoyed London society, attending plays, opera, readings and parties. Eventually, however, as she drew nearer to Christ, she made the conscious decision to retire from society and lived near her family in her home called Cowslip Green. Even though she had retired from "public" life, she remained very busy with her work among the poor of her area, as well as with the group known as the Clapham Sect, which included William Wilberforce, John Newton and others, known for their tireless work to abolish the Slave Trade. She wrote countless tracts and books for believers and people to help them understand both what was expected of them as followers of Christ, as well as on the topic of manners and conduct. This particular book was originally published under the title, "Practical Piety." It is very good Christian counsel for 21st century believers by one who lived and died over 200 years ago. Clearly her work stands the test of time!
