Review # 1 was written on 2021-02-21 00:00:00 Robert Smith, Jr. A rich little collection of texts spanning a number of years, each attesting to the saying of a certain writer or thinker who, by writing, managed to open language to an-other saying - a saying in which the saying itself, opening itself in giving itself over to the other, is more important than what it is that is said. The essays on Celan, Jeanne Delhomme, and Proust are of especial value. And, on top of this, the inclusion in this translation of the minute volume of essays, Sur Maurice Blanchot, entails much thanks (perhaps not yet given) to Michael B Smith on the part of English speaking readers of Levinas. When speaking of others, through the saying of others, Levinas is perhaps at his best - at least, in an altered sense ("proper" to his topic, perhaps...). |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-07-23 00:00:00 Neil Flynn I read the intro by the editor, which was kind of long and dense but OK, but the chapter on critical realism by Collier and the conclusion by Burawoy were both shorter and pretty much amazing. A lot of the other chapters look less interesting to me, although at some point I will definitely read the one that criticizes the concept of "social capital". |
