This a clear and concise introduction to the major debates Habermas engaged in from the late 50s until the 90s. The historical context for many of the debates is neatly summarised without digressing into historical detail, especially the student movement of the 60's and the events of '68. As Habermas's debates followed his theoretical interests it is also a lucid introduction to his work. Habermas is probably the most important of late 20th century German thinkers both philosophically and sociologically but his work is not for the fainthearted. I gave it 4 stars because I studied Habermas in the late 70's and I don't how well the book would stand up without that background, but I certainly wish I'd had something like this back then to help me along the way.
