Review # 1 was written on 2011-12-07 00:00:00 Rani Rendon Human Suffering, Human Dignity Migrant Mother by Dorothea Lange, Nipomo, California, March 1936 5 stars: Exquisite, subtle, and iconic photographs of people (mostly) - full of suffering, dignity, and tenderness, accompanied by Lange's own words and occasionally a quotation from the photograph's subject. Lange's stated philosophy was "hands off" - to photograph individuals and families unposed, un-interfered-with - in their context of place and time, situation, and relationships with family and others. Lange's most well-known and iconic photographs document some of the most troubled times in U.S. history including the widespread migration of desperate farm families during the Great Depression, their attempts to survive in California and elsewhere, and later, the Japanese Internment during World War II. Further on, she moved towards photography oriented towards human relationships, as well as various world-wide locations. The photographs are finely printed in tritone. Pledge of Allegiance at Rafael Weill Elementary School, San Francisco, April 1942. Two days before the Army evacuated all persons of Japanese ancestry from the Pacific Coast. 3 stars for the short introduction by curator/editor Keith F. Davis.

Review # 2 was written on 2018-09-30 00:00:00 Bjarne Christensen Beautiful photos, beautiful heart-wrenching stories. I'm only recently introduced to Lange's photography, and I'm hoping to read more about her life and see more of her art.
