Review # 1 was written on 2021-02-20 00:00:00 Perry Tollefson A good overview of different facets of the experience and history of the Danish West Indies: the islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, today known as the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each chapter stands on its own so there isn't a buildup of narrative in the book. Chapters covering the basic history of the islands, slave-owning ideology, slaves and the law, the rural and urban contexts, the freedman population, and finally the emancipation of the slaves in 1848. One of my favorite chapters was the one on maritime maroons, which explained how slaves would escape by sailing to other islands in the region, as well as the clever ways in which escaped slaves would hide in sugar cane fields during growing season. Growing up in Denmark, I vaguely knew the Denmark had colonies in the past but barely remembered that fact for many years as there was no education in the subject in folkeskolen. While a smaller colonial power (outside of the current territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, and the Danish West Indies, Denmark also held small territories in East India and West Africa), I think it's important for the history of the Danish colonies to be more fully known. Reading this book was the beginning of my attempt to get more familiar with this history.

Review # 2 was written on 2021-03-21 00:00:00 Brian Mysliwiec A very interesting book that covers Dutch, English but mostly Danish involvement in Africa and the West Indies. If you have any interest in the history of slavery I highly recommend this book.
