One of the reasons I picked up "Advanced Fitness Assessment" was because it's an updated version of a textbook I used when studying exercise physiology at my undergrad uni. (It was a graduate level class). I've found it to be a thorough resource on the topic of exercise prescription, and one that immensely helped me (even in previous versions) study for my respective certification. The illustrations, examples, topic expansion all were very clear cut, accessible, and provided a text I know I will use as a reference for years to come. Recommended for those studying for American College of Sports Medicine certification or those who are interested in exercise prescription, sports medicine, or exercise as medicine concepts. Overall score: 4.5/5 stars.

I can't find my exact edition listed but this is the closest one. I borrowed this large, hardcover textbook with key terms and review questions at the end of each chapter... Fourth Edition. A friend let me read it as I wanted to learn more about what personal trainers need to know for certification. I will admit to skimming a few parts, for example, the intricate calculations and formulas for clinical tests, and health/fitness examinations and screening. I was very impressed at the amount of detail and signs and symptoms trainers are able to watch for, from the young to older client, health problems/heart disease signs, gender/job/stress factors that might affect performance... And then to make a *calculated* and careful program that suits each client to meet their individual goals. I know this book has aged, but most of it still holds up in terms of cardio programs, strength training, designing flexibility exercises, and nutrition. What I did find which I thought intriguing, was that a decent nutritional app on your phone is quite accurate IF you are completely honest with your input - as I compared mine to the charts provided. Due to continually improving technology, measuring both body and nutrition are far more accurate now in most cases. Of course, we all know calipers are still around. If you want to know WHAT you should be doing and WHY to get the results you want, this is a solid start. I would recommend an updated version, and if you're using it for yourself to get started, have something to jot down notes as you go along to build your own plan with accuracy and confidence. Of course, always keep in mind that our bodies are fickle beasts and one size does not fit all. Luckily there are variations that will help you find what you need. I took a star off for the age of the book, and for the average reader (who I know don't usually pick up this sort of text) it is quite intense, and full of technical and medical information. But I liked it!
