Eh, I wasn't too impressed with this book. That being said, it wasn't bad, either. One of the nice things about the Elsvier series is that they are pretty good about integrating information and incorporating nursing-oriented focus, so you can get it all put together. NOT a great reference, book, though, at all. So don't buy if you want nursing diagnosis references or drugs, because there really isn't much in here.

A good read for a textbook. Lots of "othering" in nursing, especially mental health nursing. I found the chapters on gender identity and transvestism culturally unaware, but what do you expect with the organizing principle of the DSM-IV-TR? I also discovered, in the sexual disorder chapter, that I had been the victim of a Frotteur. It was a textbook case of it, even--occurring in the underground in Vienna while I was standing at a cash machine. Definition: "Frotteurism is characterized by rubbing or touching a nonconsenting person. In fact, the word frotteurism originates from the French word frotter, which means to 'rub or scrape.' The disorder is usually seen in men and typically occurs in busy public places, particularly in subways and buses, where the individual can escape after touching his victim. People with this disorder often have no close relationships, and this sort of aggressive contact is their only means of sexual gratification." Here I thought that guy was just a super creep, but he's actually super creep with a genuine mental illness. Either way, it reminded me of how angry and bewildered I was about it at the time, and made me think that I could not work with sexually dysfunctional patients effectively. Counseling a pedophile is beyond my capacity for empathy.
